On the trail of the causes of asthma

Asthma can have many causes. In this miniseries, we will describe the most common causes in brief. This is part two of the series. It is important that you have read and followed part one before beginning on part two. Only by consistently following the rules, will you identify your personal cause.

Testing for detergent as the cause

The prerequisite for this test is the continued consumption of the “stone age diet”. If you find you are still suffering with coughing fits at night, then your personal cause might lie in the detergents you are using for your laundry. Most detergents today use enzymes for removing dirt and stains. Despite a three or fourfold rinsing, many millions of enzymes remain in the wash. When the laundry is dry they are mostly inactive, but when in contact with moisture they can become active again. The following course of events may occur: the enzymes are inactive in the dry bedding; if the bedding is moved, for example when you move around during sleep, then fibers and enzymes from the bedding are dispersed into the air; you breathe them in; the enzymes land on your moist respiratory mucosa; if they are killer enzymes, they can now destroy the tight junctions; you get asthma.

Washing with pure water

To be free from your asthma, you need to keep clear of the detergent for 21 days. This is the time it takes for the body to regenerate the cells in the airway mucosa. You will need to remove all killer enzymes from your “clean” laundry. According to our calculations, this will require washing everything 2 or 3 times without any detergent, as a total of 12 to 14 rinses are needed to remove all traces of detergent killer enzymes.

Enzyme-free detergent for asthmatics

Technology progresses all the time, offering more options. Recently enzyme-free detergents have become available. Most manufacturers of enzyme-free detergents, however, use additional fragrances and, for allergy sufferers, this is not ideal. The company Kalixan AG (www.kalixan.com) produces and sells certified enzyme and perfume-free detergent. A product, such as this, is always the safest choice for an asthmatic.
