On the trail of the causes of asthma

Asthma can have many causes. In this miniseries, we will describe the most common causes in brief. This is part three of the series. It is important that you have read and performed the first two parts. Only by consistently following the rules, will you identify your personal cause.

Dishwashers as a possible cause

It is known that children have fewer allergies in households where the dishes are washed by hand. A Swedish study has examined the link between the use of dishwashers and allergies in children. The result: children in households where the dishes were washed by hand, had significantly fewer allergies than children in households that use a dishwasher. Because children are particularly affected by this phenomenon, we will examine this study in more detail in another post.

Testing cleaning agents as a cause

Following parts 1 and 2 of our miniseries on the causes of asthma, you should now be consuming a “stone age (or paleo) diet” and using an enzyme-free laundry detergent. However, if you are still suffering from asthma, it could be that the cause lies in your household cleaning products. The next step is to avoid contact with any cleaning products for 28 days. Wash your dishes with plain water or with an enzyme-free detergent. For all other housework use an enzyme-free cleaning agent or simply use plain water, being sure to always wear latex free gloves. It is important to follow the rules precisely because every little mistake means the 28 day cycle of cell regeneration has to start again.

How is the dishwasher involved in the development of asthma?

The explanation of how laundry enzymes can cause asthma, probably also applies to washing dishes in the dishwasher. Unfortunately there are, as yet, no scientific investigations of the enzymes used in dishwasher detergents, so we can only surmise a logical conclusion. The enzymes used in dishwasher agents are very efficient and powerful because the consumer demands the brightest, shiniest dishes. It can be assumed that some enzymes remain on the crockery after it has dried and only become active when moist. Therefore, when a plate is filled with food, such as boiled vegetables or soup, the enzymes, which are still on the plate, are released and start their work again. They are swallowed with the food and enter the stomach and intestines. Here they act as a killer enzymes and, by opening or destroying tight junctions, they can cause allergies to develop.

Enzyme-free cleaning agent for asthmatics

Recently there are more and more enzyme-free cleaning agent appearing on the market. Many manufacturers of enzyme-free cleaning agents, unfortunately, use additional perfumes or other additives, which is not ideal for allergy sufferers. The company Kalixan AG (www.kalixan.com) produces and sells certified enzyme and perfume-free cleaning agents. Products, such as these, are always the safest choice for asthmatics.
